Brooks Raise Scandinavian Timber Prices
A letter recently circulated from timber merchants Brooks Group says that they’re having to raise the price of softwoods. This is due to the mild winter in Scandinavia, and consequent inaccessibility in lumber areas - essentially, the machinery is sinking into soft ground that would normally be frozen. It’s expected that prices will re-stabilise, and probably even drop back, as the Scandinavian timber business adjusts, but we can expect more changes like this if mild winters continue.

Hi, just thought I’d post a comment to say good to see an Irish woodworking blog. This site looks great and has some excellent links. Hopefully the online woodworking community in Ireland will continue to grow and develop. Keep up the good work. :¬)
Ps. I post under the username MT over at the woodcraft forum on Boards.ie

I thnink this website is a great method to address issues to people associatd with woodwork in Ireland.
We as importers have been advised of prise increases by major European manufacturers of particleboard, MDF etc.
The reasons they give are due to the high cost of raw materials which has resulted from the huge increase in timber consumption for fuel ie pellets for wood burners etc.
The producers have no option but to pass on these increases and the price levels are being increased with hardly any notice given.
Plywood is being imported to Ireland from China in huge quantities. The quality in general is quite poor and it has become a real issue for carpenters who really expect plywood to perform well as a stable, strong material.
As the main importers fight to compete on price the quality issues are being pushed aside.
Our company continues to sell chinese plywood but we offer Russian Birch plywood which is WBP also giving customers a high quality product for interio and exterior use
